What I mentioned above were two different kind of app interfaces: console and windows.  These applications translate into endless threads of software code. It is the work of a proficient software engineer that burnt the midnight oil to write and execute programs, learn object-oriented concepts and correlate logics. 

This may sound a bit complicated, but software engineering is an art of sorts. From learning the basics of structured query language (SQL) and C++, to practicing software development with application development platforms, software engineers are like parts of moving tech infrastructure.

Being in a role of software engineer doesn’t translate into a 4×4 cubicle, but solving real world problems with automation. 

What to keep in mind before becoming a software engineer?

To be a software engineer, first decide on what level of programming language you want to study. There can be two types of streams to choose once you become a high school graduate. Either science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or computer science. Then, to start with, you need to learn the ropes of algorithmic flowcharts and mathematical operators.

How to get a software engineering degree?

The first step in embarking on a career as a software engineer is to get a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer applications, software engineering, computer programming, mathematics, applied computing or a related field.   • Junior software development engineer (SDE 1): A junior software developer assists in developing, testing and maintaining software applications. The major role of junior software engineers is to organize client projects and problems and publish code directly on the live environment. 
  • Lead/Senior software development engineer (SDE 2): These professionals overlook projects and guide project execution teams from beginning to end. They design architecture, ensure code accuracy and overlook other teams. Additionally, they mentor software engineers, manage tight deadlines, and collaborate with product teams to ensure smooth functioning and operational excellency
  • Full stack developer : These professionals work both on the front-end interface and the back end interface of a product. They build graphical user interfaces (GUI), handle database, port server connections, handle server side logics and ensure practices of data security within a network infrastructure. They also maintain network bandwidth, wireless software defined wide area network (SD-WAN), and other parameters.  
  • Node.js developer : These professionals build web or console applications on the server side using React.JS. They are responsible to develop high performance systems, user interfaces, responsive website graphics and components, and handle dynamic API connectors and large datasets. These developers focus on building easy to use and web-friendly applications with JavaScript framework.
  • Angular developer : An angular developer builds dynamic web applications using angular framework. They develop responsive front-end interfaces, software integrations, virtual machine frameworks, and software APIs. The role of an angular developer focuses on writing TypeScript code, handling data binding and supervising production. 
  • Web developer: Web programmers or developers design the front end and the backend of websites. By working on web programming languages such as PHP, HTML and JavaScript, they beautify the design, layout and graphics of the webpages, while also maintaining the server, application logic and troubleshooting check-ins. 
  • Technical or platform architect: A technical architect works with the user lifecycle teams, design teams and data engineering teams to develop newer product upgrades, make front-end design changes, build product architecture frameworks, solve client-side software glitches and improve app performance. 
  • Principal software engineer: Mostly, principal software engineer overlook the work of engineers, developers and analysts. They volunteer for cross functional work for sales, product, revenue, and marketing teams and understand the end proposition and business objectives..
  • Chief technology officer: Chief technology officer is at the top of the software engineering hierarchy and mostly collaborates with other C-level suite members to be a part of tech advisory councils of various non profit or profitable organizations.

There can be some confusion as to the difference between a software developer and a software engineer. The main difference between these two roles is the actual job function.

Develop a passion early

“I started learning to write code as a teenager on our family Apple II+. The first language I learned was Applesoft Basic, and I read books and magazines and copied that code into the computer. When it worked, it was amazing! When it didn’t, it was a puzzle to figure out why. I was hooked.

When I went to college, I didn’t study computer science. I didn’t see software engineering or software development as a career, so I graduated with a degree in liberal arts instead. Once I got out of college, I took a mainframe programming job and my title was statistician, but it would now be called a data analyst. I liked working there, but when the web became a thing, I knew it was my true calling.

Since then, I’ve been doing custom software engineering, developing, and consulting since the mid 1990s. I don’t have any regrets about the way my career unfolded. I sometimes wonder how it would have been different with a CS or MIS degree. But the job of a consultant is to understand the customer’s problems, think critically, explore all the options, and make a recommendation. My degree prepared me for all the non-coding aspects of my work. How to gain experience as a software engineer

Below are some additional career opportunities that you can explore before landing that high paying and secure software engineering job. 

  • Internships: Start small. Don’t worry about the late night shifts or bear it till the time you can. Working with multiple big firms as a software intern trains you on client resolution processes and strengthens your hold on software development, compiling code and debugging code. 
  • Freelancing: Look out for technical trainee opportunities with platforms like Upwork and Fiverr which are freelancing agencies that outsource their software services to interns and freelancers. 
  • Contributing to open source:  Contribute your software analysis on open source platforms like stackoverflow.com, stack exchange or GitHub. Share your code and output with fellow computer science researches and build a community and networking circle.   
  • Contributing to company projects: Look out for company datasets on websites like Keggle or Hackerearth and enroll in their tech fests or hackathon challenges.
